IMPACT

Productivity

Demonstration of the use of a smart irrigation system in woody and horticultural crops supported by soil sensors that enable water use efficiency of up to 20%.

Farm challenges

  • Management of irrigation strategies in drought situations.
  • Enables water management to identify the right times to apply water deficit.
  • Adaptation of irrigation systems to specific irrigation allocations.

Assistance / Boost program

DIGISPAC Project.

Innovative features of the initiative / solution

Practical training in precision irrigation and irrigation strategies in drought situations.

Results obtanied

The proof of concept for the technology has been carried out on various crops in real situations on agricultural plots. The system is currently being marketed by the company VEGA. The software has been developed by IRTA Catalonia, and here in Extremadura, calibrations have been carried out on olive trees, nectarines and industrial tomatoes.

Lessons learned

The precision irrigation system helps farmers manage irrigation more efficiently in drought conditions, allowing moisture sensors to identify soil moisture levels, saving water when crops do not need it and reducing losses due to deep drainage.
